A Tragic Past

Before moving to Greengale, Amber and her family lived in a nearby city. When she was younger, her mother, Vivian, dated Allen's uncle Raymond and as a result of this long term relationship, the Maya family eventually moved in with him. It was during this time, that 12-year-old Amber Maya, met Allen, who was fifteen at the time.

Things seemed to be going well but then Raymond, without any explanation, decided to move on. He left Vivian in an apartment she couldn't afford, and with nowhere else to turn they were forced into urban housing projects. By now Amber was thirteen, and her younger brother, Ryan was nine. Though Raymond was gone, Allen and his mother remained close to the family.

The neighborhood where the Maya family lived had a great deal of gang activity. Amber and her brother had to fend for themselves often, because their mother worked long hours. One day, on a routine trip to a small corner store, Ryan was shot during a robbery. Amber was devastated. Though there was nothing she could have done to stop it, she blamed herself for his death. It was Allen who stopped her from trying to do something foolish to avenge her brother's death.

After this, Mrs. Guardman worked feverishly to help the Maya family move into an affordable home in Greengale. However, life for Amber was never the same. She still carried the guilt and pain of her brother's death. She joined the A&A club several months later because her mother felt it would be good for her but Amber did not become close with the group. She is very quiet and only confides in Allen, who she regards as almost an older-brother figure. He is the only person she really trusts.

A Reprisal of Misfortune

Amber was transported to Mendala 2 weeks in the past in the war-torn city of [Beckerson]. With no real remaining government most of the inhabitants had fled and the city was overrun with gangs. Before Amber could leave the city to search for her friends, she found a small boy named Josh. His parents had been killed in the war and because of this, he and his sister, Rachel, were all alone. Josh lost track of his sister one day and he had been searching for her ever since.

The young boy reminded Amber strongly of her own younger brother who she had lost years ago and she tried to help me find his sister. In an effort to stay safe, Amber tried to solicit the help of a group of kids who seemed friendly despite being one of the many juvenile gangs roaming the streets. Her trust was betrayed however when these so-called friends revealed their true motives and tried to sell her and Josh into slavery.

Amber tried to fight off her assailants but in a repeat of her nightmare, Josh is killed in the attack. Apparently he jumped in the way of a knife that was meant for Amber. Having lost the will to fight after seeing Josh die right before her eyes, Amber was easily subdued and sold to slave traders. Her week in captivity was plagued with unspeakable horrors until she was finally sold to Rick Redstone in Weavers Road.

Fortunately, this was during the same time that Ashley, Allen, and Derick were also in Weavers Road. When there paths crossed, Amber was freed from her new owner and rejoined her team. However the trials and tragedies she's already experienced on Mendala left her ego shattered and her resolve completely broken.
