There's Nothing Like the Game
Bernie is very carefree. He loves sports and adventure. It's no wonder that he was one of the first to join the Action and Adventure Club. Throughout his years at Greengale High, Bernie has played football, basketball, baseball, and soccer and excelled in all of them. His athletic prowess earned him a scholarship to a well known college. Bernie always shows true sportsmanship and enjoys a challenge.
When Bernie is transported to Mendala he ends up 10 years in the past and in the underground dwarf city of [Glorandor]. During his time there, he taught the dwarves all the sports he knew, because on Mendala, there was only one sport-like activity, Hyperball. The dwarves loved learning the different sports and even built huge underground Fields to play them.
A Son of Glorandor
Glorandor dwarves are extremely secretive, even more than other dwarves. Because of this, no outsider knows where their city is. Though they do not automatically mistrust all humans, they are careful not to allow their secrets to be revealed. Bernie respected this and over the 10 years that he lived with them, he earned the dwarves trust. When he saved the life of Elmore Findler, son of Chief Findler, the guardian and leader of Glorandor, it earned him higher status among the dwarves. Chief Findler regards Bernie as another son and treats him as such.
It is because of Bernie that the Glorandor dwarves played an active part in standing against Davron, first by standing sentinel on [Weather Mountain] to protect the [Weather Rod] and once again by aiding the Fantasma in his efforts to reclaim Fantasmal Mountain. Though Elmore's life was lost in a battle on Weather Mountain, Chief Findler still came to the Fantasma's aid because of Bernie's request.
Bernie's link to the dwarves was enhanced when it was discovered that his seal of the Book of War was used by one of Glorandor's former leaders, Chief Gifton. Findler discovered the seal on a statue of Gifton, though it was never seen there before. It seems clear that there it was not a coincidence that Bernie landed in Glorandor when he was sent back in time.
Bernie is very loyal to Glorandor and after so much time there, he considers it his home, and the people his family.
