Epouranal Mage

(Adimus Classification)

There are only ever twelve epouranal mages at any given time, one for each of the twelve beasts of the heavens known as epourtherions. It is not possible to obtain the rank of epouranal mage by practice or study. When a current epouranal mage dies, their power passes to another person. That person could be of any adimus rank, it does not seem to matter. The selection of an epouranal mage has been a phenomenon that has completely baffled scientists. However the spiritual texts provide a clear explaination to the existence and function of epouranal mages.

It is said that the selection of an epouranal is made by the epourtherion and this is why no one knows who the next epouranal will be, not even the Fantasma. Their power comes from their link to the epourtherions that chose them. There have been multiple historic accounts of an epourtherion revealing itself physically to protect an epouranal mage in danger. Epouranals are more powerful than every other adminus classification, with the possible exception of the Fantasma (although this has never been tested... fortunately).

The epouranals are considered the highest prophets of the land. This is also due to their epourtherion link. They receive insight and guidance directly from these heavenly beasts, which of course are linked to Elohim. The Fantasma often seeks their wisdom in matters of legislation and government.

The epouranals are also considered the highest form of law, even above the power of the Fantasma. Together their word can overturn even the edicts of the Fantasma. If a dispute cannot be handled by the justice system of the Fantasmal Government, the final and ultimate step is to take the matter up before the High Council. Such a thing happens very rarely. The last occurance was in 6,256 TA when the use of Fantasmal gold as an alternative for "true" gold was challenged by 17 nations. In this case, the epouranals held that the Fantasmal could use whatever measures he deemed necessary to maintain a stable worldwide economy as long as appropriate checks and balances were put into place.

Epouranal Mages live solitary lives. When they are chosen, they usually leave their families, even if they were already married, and live apart from normal society. Their only companions tend to be the guardian that is assigned to them, though in many cases, epouranals do not even have a guardian. It is a courtesy extended by the Fantasma, however they are not required to have them.

Epouranals usually only venture out of their solitude to reveal prophecy or teach on spiritual matters that they consider important.
